With the aim to reduce vehicular congestion, prioritize active modes of transportation and increase public transit use, The Town of Banff identified eight streetscape typologies that outline how and where each mode of transportation (inclusive of walking, cycling, transit, heavy vehicles and cars, both moving and parked) is to be accommodated and prioritized.

The Banff Streetscape Design Guidelines provide a framework for the redesign and redevelopment of the Streetscape network, with a focus towards designing to encourage and accommodate active modes of transportation by making walking and cycling more safe and more desirable than driving;  design to make transit more accessible and more efficient than driving;  aesthetically represent the authentic sense of place and inherent character of Banff; reflect the already established ‘Banff Refreshing’ urban design language; create a feasible maintenance regime that incorporates year-round care and effective snow storage and removal;  enhance accessibility and year-round use for all; and provide a connected and cohesive movement network and integrate stormwater management strategies to improve hydrological functions and green infrastructure.
