Opened for play in 1981, the McCall Lake Golf Course had become outdated due to advances in golf equipment technology and increased golfer expectations. Many of the hazard locations were redundant or out of play, leading to frustrated golfers and longer rounds. Deteriorating turf conditions in areas had diminished the quality of the overall golf experience. Significant reinvestment would be required in order to meet golfer expectations and compete with newer offerings in the competitive golf marketplace.
One of the primary design objectives for this project was to update the course to current design standards commensurate with advancements in modern golf equipment technology. Bunkers were relocated to enhance strategic and visual interest, while increasing the pace of play. Tees were added to challenge longer hitters, while the addition of forward tees has made the game significantly more enjoyable for shorter hitters.
Playing conditions were enhanced through fairway re-grading efforts and the addition of a new sub-surface drainage system. Greens were recontoured and resurfaced to provide exciting new pin locations and more consistent putting surfaces. Bunkers were rebuilt using modern construction methods and a USGA-specified sand product to provide more consistent playing conditions.
In addition to the many technical enhancements, significant efforts were made to enhance and freshen up the aesthetic experience. This includes extensive tree planting to reinforce the parkland character, new site furnishings and an upgraded cart path system.
