Revitalizing Bow River’s south bank as a thriving downtown destination for ecological health, cultural storytelling and community

project overview

RiverWalk West reimagines the south bank of Calgary’s Bow River as a vibrant, inclusive public realm rooted in ecological stewardship and historical connection. The multi-award-winning project boldly reclaims space for people and nature, transforming underutilised urban land into a network of multi-use pathways rich with character and activity.

The design draws from traditional Indigenous origins shaping six distinct areas — including the West Village Riparian Trail, Grassland Bowl and Land Art Island — all reflecting the site’s legacy of gathering, ceremony and exchange.

Drawing people from downtown Calgary to the river through dynamic topography and inclusive public spaces, RiverWalk West lays the foundation for broader city-building goals — from economic resilience and green infrastructure to cultural continuity and multimodal transport.

problems solved

A tight budget and accelerated schedule demanded a highly efficient, collaborative process. We responded with a series of fast-paced “design blitz” sessions, combining rigorous research, real-time problem solving and interdisciplinary creativity to craft a unified vision.

At the heart of the challenge was elevating an overlooked stretch of riverfront into a hub for urban and ecological regeneration. The final product reconfigures roadways, consolidates land and sustains environmental health, while seamlessly integrating pedestrian mobility and public art.

Putting humans and habitat first, RiverWalk West doesn't just meet practical infrastructure needs — it tells a story that nods to Calgary’s layered past and promising future.

fun fact

This project came about through The City of Calgary’s first ever international design competition. The design earned national recognition with a 2024 National Urban Design award from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada for Urban Design Plans. Locally, it won the Calgary Mayor’s Urban Design Awards for Conceptual or Theoretical Urban Design Projects in 2024.
