Bridging imagination with intention: Downtown Banff pedestrians flow into nearby natural attractions amid stunning Bow River scenery

project overview

For more than a century, the Town of Banff entertained the idea of a pedestrian bridge over the Bow River uniting downtown Central Park with nearby Rocky Mountain nature trails. Finally, after receiving adequate funding in 2021, we were entrusted to bring this iconic vision to life.

Stretching 80 meters, the Nancy Pauw Pedestrian Bridge is a structurally flawless, visually captivating timber arch effortlessly connecting the bustling town with the serene ecosystem beside it, offering a safe, scenic path to nearly 1 million pedestrians annually.

problems solved

We were challenged with integrating static infrastructure into a dynamic, ecologically rich landscape — all while alleviating congestion, proactively preventing flooding and creating a barrier-free extension of existing routes.

Equally prioritizing function and beauty, we smoothed traffic flow for various user groups coming from Banff Avenue, widening pathways and adding “mixing areas” at intersections to maximize space for riverside movement and gathering.

A gradual rise to the abutments along a gentle slope provides unobstructed corridors for wildlife and humans. We also calculated the bridge elevation to avoid flooding and ensure a harmonious integration with the environment.

Moreover, we effectively doubled picnic and leisure opportunities across the bridge and easily accessible from the town, supporting recreation and socialization for bikers and walkers alike.

fun fact

The structure is an extremely shallow, pure arch, created with stepped Glulam girders and weathering steel haunches. The bridge was prefabricated and assembled into two sections, placed simultaneously.
