Project Type | Park Renewal, Low Impact Design

Groundcubed partnered with Explore Edmonton to revitalize Klondike Park, located in the heart of the Edmonton Exhibition Lands. Once a seasonal Klondike-themed park for K-Days, the space had become unusable and inaccessible to the public. The renewed park now serves as a vibrant, four-season facility featuring a sunken lawn for summer events and winter skating, a market stall plaza, a legacy play area, and colorful site furniture.

A major aspect of the project was the installation of a Low Impact Development (LID) system that captures and manages stormwater on-site. This system feeds into soil vaults beneath the market plaza, supporting the growth of a large grid of Elm trees. During construction, the team faced challenges when they discovered remnants of an old subdivision, including roadways, foundations, and utilities. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the design team and construction manager developed solutions that minimized delays and kept the project on track.

Completed in fall 2024, Klondike Park now meets the needs of event programming while also serving as a public space. The master plan envisions future connections to Borden Park, the urban farm, and new residential developments.
