Project Type | Open Space Rehabilitation

Beaumaris Lake is the oldest and largest storm water management facility in the City of Edmonton. Beaumaris Lake opened in 1979 with two and a half kilometres of trails and four adjacent park spaces. Beaumaris Lake offers an abundance of recreational activities for Edmontonians and has become a well-loved destination in the City of Edmonton. With aging infrastructure impeding the access for users at Beaumaris Lake, the City of Edmonton was looking for design solutions to improve the experience for all users, while addressing the site line and safety concerns brought forward by the surrounding communities. By prioritizing the rehabilitation of the community gathering spaces, to create comfortable, safe, and active spaces that encourage exercise and physical activity, the goal was to activate these areas, which would discourage any anti-social behaviour. Accompanying the objective to rejuvenate the open spaces surrounding Beaumaris Lake, there was a strong desire to enhance the aesthetics and provide educational opportunities around the function of storm water management facilities in a community and the overall drainage network of a city. With a previously approved conceptual and preliminary design for the open space rehabilitation of Beaumaris Lake, ground cubed teamed with AECOM to complete the detailed design and tender documents. The scope of work included the detailed design for a completely rehabilitated East and West Park, including plazas, trails, plant material, and site furnishings. Also included were the restoration of the promenade, six viewpoints, and the design of both fitness and educational/interpretive signage.
