132 Ave Renewal
Client | City of Edmonton
Status | Under Construction
Project Type | Streetscape/Urban Design
The 132 Avenue Renewal is a City of Edmonton project identified under the Building Great Neighbourhoods (BGN) branch to re-envision and reconstruct the 7.3 km roadway. ground cubed is the project landscape architect and are working with Scheffer Andrew (transportation engineers) and Y-station (public engagement specialist).
132 Avenue is a collector road that fulfills a function for all surrounding neighbourhoods. Collector roadways connect residents and local roads to major arterial roads of the city. Small neighbourhood businesses form hubs of activity along collector roadways and connect people to other community gathering places such as schools, churches, community leagues and recreational facilities. This renewal is about investing in public infrastructure within communities, to enhance their livability and longevity. Along the collector roadway, there are many instances that currently create inconsistencies throughout the roadway, these include: road widths, traffic speeds (school and playground zones), missing or variation in width of sidewalks, missing bike infrastructure, service roads, parking zones and school pick-up / drop-off zones.
As a result of an inconsistent streetscape, 132 Avenue requires substantial improvements. Improvements will include street level layout, road width reconfiguration, surface pavement, bike facilities, sidewalks, planting zones, street furniture, surface works, and implementation of Low Impact Development (LID) features to improve and facilitate better stormwater management practices.
