Narrowed streets, widened connections: Reviving a once-industrial corridor to benefit neighbours, nature and the next generation of transit.
project overview
With two future light rail stations and a wave of new development ahead for Calgary’s Ramsay and Inglewood neighbourhoods, The City recognized the need to proactively update the 12 Street SE corridor in a way that preserves the area’s heritage while unlocking its future potential.
Selected as prime consultant for the Ramsay-Inglewood streetscape improvements, our team is transforming a bleak, industrial roadway dominated by train tracks into a dynamic, safe and people-centered cross-section.
The project set the stage for district-aligned infrastructure with new bike lanes connecting historic districts with new transit and the Barley Belt. Narrower roadways created space for more than 150 new trees and widened sidewalks. The corridor will become one of the first in North America to permanently reduce vehicular width in favour of increased public realm.
problems solved
The corridor posed multifaceted challenges, such as aging underground infrastructure and competing needs for pedestrian, transit, and vehicles. We flipped the script, using multimodal opportunities to drive road design — not the other way around. Early-stage analysis informed a dynamic layout despite the older infrastructure’s existing constraints.
Through extensive collaboration, the design introduced a fluid, adaptable streetscape that balances “spaces of movement” with “spaces of moments.” Early coordination with utilities and hydro-vac investigations resolved construction conflicts before they arose, minimizing costly surprises.
The outcome? A resilient community asset that will seamlessly connect Ramsay, Inglewood, area businesses and amenities, future LRT stations, and the broader multimodal network, all while opening doors for future City partnerships and landscape design-focussed streetscape projects.
fun fact
This streetscape re-design is an inner-city project that reduces roadway width for vehicles in exchange for increased pedestrian space, setting a bold precedent in Calgary.
