A natural gem within city limits: Transforming Fish Creek Provincial Park into a sustainable, safe and beautiful hub for life's most memorable adventures and events

project overview

What started as a simple life-cycle assessment of envelope conditions for 23 group use shelters and washroom facilities at Fish Creek Provincial Park blossomed into a greater landscape evaluation, addressing parkwide safety and maintenance concerns within a sensitive environment.

Shifting the focus to a more sustainable future after a thorough stakeholder engagement process, groundcubed collaborated with Alberta Parks to better understand the unique habitat, use patterns and maintenance regimes. Balancing municipal and provincial priorities, the result was Glennfield Facilities — a harmonious blend of infrastructure and ecology designed to stand the test of time and terrain.

problems solved

Alberta Parks faced more than aging shelters and washrooms. As a heavily utilised provincial park in the heart of the city, the facilities were struggling to keep up with visitor demand, environmental wear and long-term functionality. These structural issues not only compromised the parkgoers’ experience but also strained maintenance efforts within this ecologically "touchy” setting.

A holistic revitalization was needed. Through comprehensive assessment, design, construction, planning and administration, we coordinated structures for group use and washroom facilities, and we upgraded the park’s landscape, amenities, grading and bridges over sensitive areas.

Today, Glennfield Facilities is a hub for outdoor recreation, gatherings and weddings, highlighting our distinct ability to ideate practical yet beautiful environments that effortlessly complement Calgary’s natural surroundings.

fun fact

Glennfield Facilities now hosts a suite of Environmental Education programs in its accommodating structures, from youth groups to professional development courses for teachers. This outdoor classroom instills a love of nature into future generations while ensuring the long-term ecological stability of this protected area.
