Herding history and heritage into a new era of innovation with eye-catching, eclectic, and iconic civic welcome points
project overview
The culturally rich site at the crossroads of the Bow and Elbow Rivers has long been a vital community hub — first as a regional gathering place for Indigenous groups, then as the birthplace of Calgary itself, and now as the epicenter of Calgary Stampede. Celebrating both the land and animals that shaped the city, groundcubed revitalized the space with three distinct, vibrant entry points designed for contemporary connection.
The project introduces a series of “Gatekeepers,” or artful animal figures serving as striking welcome features. These Gatekeepers — buffalo, horse, and bull — respectively represent the past, present, and future while seamlessly guiding visitors into Stampede Park. The internally illuminated pieces feature custom-colored panels framed in black steel and are mounted on plinths that double as signage and wayfinding elements.
problems solved
Our design directly addresses several challenges identified in early feedback phases. Gatekeepers read clearly as pedestrian entrances, their orientation carefully refined to make a statement from multiple sightlines. We also integrated the plinths with the ground plane, allowing for a more intentional primary signage location. Durable materials, anti-vandalism surface coatings, and battered edges minimizing climbing hazards empower the Gatekeepers’ long-term resilience.
Balancing aesthetics with practical safety considerations, we reinforced the Park's identity as a longtime cultural corridor. Furthermore, our understanding and respect for the local landscape, ecology, and history ensures this modern interpretation doesn’t tarnish the site’s storied legacy but rather enhances it.
fun fact
The stone veneer cladding the Gatekeeper plinths is sourced from local quarries in Alberta, staying true to authenticity and sustainability. This choice supports regional craftsmanship and creates a lasting connection between the artwork and the landscape it honours.
