Breathing new life into an urban amenity with upgraded trails, improved sightlines, and spaces balancing recreation and resilience
project overview
Beaumaris Lake, Edmonton’s oldest and largest stormwater management facility, has served as both a community retreat and functional urban infrastructure since 1979. With aging amenities and limited accessibility raising safety concerns, the City of Edmonton launched a major revitalization effort to elevate this well-loved, park destination — and trusted us to execute it.
In partnership with AECOM, we spearheaded the detailed design and tender documentation for the lake’s surrounding East and West parks. The refreshed vision prioritized usability, safety, and education, incorporating upgraded plazas, trails, viewpoints, fitness stations, and interpretive signage to encourage public understanding of stormwater systems.
Throughout the project, we remained laser-focused on simultaneously delivering thoughtful design solutions, addressing community feedback, and upholding ecological integrity. With community input framing the project’s future, a rejuvenated green space that fosters wellness, learning, and inclusivity emerged — reaffirming Beaumaris as a natural gem within Edmonton’s urban landscape.
problems solved
Preserving the sensitive environment while modernizing its infrastructure presented complex challenges. First, trail realignments were designed to meet accessibility standards while also protecting mature trees, which required close collaboration with Urban Forestry.
Next came the artful act of balancing nostalgia with practical water management. EPCOR’s flood resilience requirements meant replacing beloved floating docks with storm-resistant view decks, and this called for sensitive public messaging.
The project also demanded careful coordination with the City’s lighting department and ongoing utility work in adjacent neighborhoods to ensure new infrastructure could seamlessly integrate without interrupting service or duplicating efforts. This collaborative approach minimized disruptions, aligned construction timelines, and allowed for strategic placement of lighting that enhanced both safety and park usability.
fun fact
Did you know Beaumaris Lake was the first man-made stormwater lake in Canada designed with year-round public recreation in mind? It quickly became a trailblazer for integrating municipal infrastructure with public leisure — long before “going green” was a thing. Over the decades, the 2.5-kilometre trail system has seen everything from wedding photos to winter skis (probably).
